Chimney cowl fitting in Bordon keeps rain, birds and nests out of the flue while still letting the chimney breathe. It is a quick job that solves damp, draughts and blocked flues on both working and unused chimneys.
An open pot takes rain straight down the flue, which soaks the brickwork from the inside. It also invites birds to nest, and a nest blocks the flue completely. A cowl covers the opening, keeps the weather and the wildlife out and lets air move through.
More Information
Different cowls do different jobs. A capping cowl suits a flue no longer in use but still needing ventilation. A bird guard protects a working flue. Anti downdraught cowls help where smoke blows back into the room. We look at how you use the chimney and fit what suits it.
On a working chimney the cowl must not restrict the draw, so the right type and size matter. On a disused flue the aim is the opposite, keeping water out while leaving enough airflow to stop damp sitting in the stack. Sealing it fully is what causes problems.
Cowl fitting is one of the smaller jobs HK Roof Care does, and often the one that sorts a problem people have lived with for years. Across 15 years around Bordon we have fitted plenty to unused flues where rain and birds were the cause of damp or a smell in the room below.

STILL NOT SURE?
Yes. A bird guard cowl covers the pot with a mesh that birds cannot get through while smoke and air still pass. It is best fitted outside nesting season, and we check the flue is clear first. If a nest is already in place it needs removing before the cowl goes on.
Yes, and it is a good idea. A capping cowl keeps rain out of the flue but leaves a vent so air can still move. Blocking a disused flue completely traps moisture inside the stack, which leads to damp on the chimney breast. The vented option avoids that.
The fitting itself is quick, often under an hour. Most of the time goes on safe access to the top of the stack. Where a tower or scaffolding is needed we allow for that in the price. It is often done alongside repointing or flashing work while access is there.
